Every Little Thing: Song Picture Book Resource

I've added another wonderful picture book to my library of song picture books.  Based on the song, "Three Little Birds," by Bob Marley, Cedella Marley's adaptation is a beautifully illustrated version of the popular song.  With a positive message and a catchy tune, this book is sure to be a listening hit for primary students!

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Just finished a new bulletin board on my door that I am super excited about.  It is always my goal to help each and every child find their own personal musicianship abilities.  I saw a board similar to this done to help each child find their leadership potential, but I converted it for my needs in the music room.  Hope you like it as much as I do!

I'm in Love with a Big Blue Frog

It is pretty obvious to all who know me that I love children's books as a teaching tool in the music classroom.  I got some great new books in and I want to share them with you.

Today, I discovered "I'm in Love with a Big Blue Frog," as performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary.

This adorable book also has a beautiful message hidden in it's clever text and catchy tune.  I can't wait to use this as a closer with my primary students this fall!

Chevron and Polka Dot Word Wall

The next piece in the chevron and polka dot collection is complete, the word wall.

This set includes a word wall header that is generic and could be used by all specialists and a music word wall header, specifically for music teachers. It includes sub headers for the word wall, one for each grade K-6 (I have a separate word wall section for each grade level in my room). Then, corresponding word cards are included for each grade level that match the corresponding header. This word wall set would be great for anyone who works with multiple grade levels More chevron and polka dot theme classroom tools will be uploaded for you soon. Chevron Dot Orff Instrument Labels

The next piece of chevron dot classroom decorations is ready.  I just completed creating chevron and dot themed Orff instrument Labels.

This set includes instrument labels to help your students develop instrumental recognition and vocabulary. Print labels and attach to the front of your classroom xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. All xylophone labels are green chevron, metallophone labels are blue chevron, and glockenspiel labels are blue dots. Soprano, Alto, and Bass are differentiated on the cards. Chevron/Polka Dot Rhythm Vocabulary Posters

Its the time of the year when I redo my classroom theme and decorations.  I try to change my room up each year, since I have the same students every year for six years.  I hate to leave things the same.  I like the excitement of the new.

This year, I'm creating a chevron/polka dot theme.  I've finished the first component for you today, and there will be more to follow.  The first piece is a set of posters or a bulletin board set for rhythm note and rest values and their formal names.  A note rhythm tree and a rest rhythm tree is also included.

Print these out to fill a bulletin board, hang them on your wall or door, hang them from the ceiling and laminate the note and rest pages together.  Or, print them and put them in the front of your student binders if you are working with older students.

Stay tuned for more chevron/polka dot themed room decorations and teaching tools!  Enjoy!

Brain Dance Chopstick Activity

I learned a wonderful brain dance, teamwork activity from our Brain Dance artist-in-residence, Kerri Lynn Nichols.  This is a good beginning of the year movement exploration activity.

·      Partner students up.  Each set of students receives one plastic chopstick.  I purchased mine on Amazon.com
·      It is the task of the students to keep the chopstick held between the two students’ palms, with one end resting on each student’s hands.  Nothing else touches the chopstick.
·      When the music begins, students must move to the music as a team, while keeping the chopstick upheld between their hands.  To be successful, without dropping it, they will need to move slowly.  Thus, I often partner this with slow music from David Chappelle's Music for Creative Dance.
·      This task is more difficult for students then the simple directions state.  It is good for engaging the brain and developing teamwork.
·      Advanced Option – One student closes their eyes while the other student moves just their hands around while still maintaining the chopstick between them.  The student with their eyes open then moves their partner around ‘general space’ being careful not to run them into anything in the room.

I'm baaaaack!

Hello my blog world friends.  I'm baaaack!
Sorry for the long hiatus the past few months.  The end of the school year was a whirl wind, and the summer has been the same.  Though my great intentions for blogging and TPT creating over the summer were written on a beautiful list, not much got crossed off.  Vacations, graduate work, friends, sunshine and other consuming things took over my creating.  It's time to get in gear and get ready for school so new ideas will be flowing more frequently!  Hope you stop back to Treble in the Classroom often and have been enjoying your summer!
